Top 10 Highest Paid Bollywood Actresses in 2016

2016 has been a wonderful years for Bollywood as many women-centric films like ‘Neerja’ and ‘Pink’ did outstanding business. Though our Hindi film heroines are no less than their male counterparts, they do not get equal pay. However, there is a long list of actresses who are quite vocal about their remuneration and charge as per their skills and caliber. Here we pull up a list of highest Paid Bollywood actress in 2016.

Known for playing a string of strong characters in a career spanning across 11 years, Vidya Balan is one of the finest actresses that Bollywood is so proud of. She does a very few films, but the movies she agrees to be a part of have something so strong and intense in them that they go on to hit the right chord of the audience more often than not. The talented actress has done around 21 films in her career so far, out of them three films have been immensely successful and one even brought her the most prestigious National Film Award. In 2016, Vidya appeared in only one film – ‘Kahaani 2’, which was a sequel to his super successful film ‘Kahani’ released in 2012. The film was liked by the audience just like its predecessor. Currently, the actress takes home Rs. 8 crores per film.

Born on 1st January 1979 in Mumbai, to parents of Tamilian descent, Vidya was always inclined towards acting. After appearing in several ads and trying her luck in films down south, she started her acting career with television and did the iconic show ‘Hum Paanch’ produced by Ekta Kapoor. Soon, Vidya quit TV and centered her focus on films only. In 2005, she was roped in for the musical drama ‘Parineeta’, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, with whom Vidya had done a couple of commercials. ‘Parineeta’ opened to positive response and launched her career in Hindi films. Since then there has been no looking back for the actress and Vidya has done a number of remarkable films including ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, ‘Paa’, ‘Ishqiya’, ‘No One Killed Jessica’, ‘The Dirty Picture’ and “Kahaani’. With a number of great performances to her credit, Vidya has carved out a niche for herself in the male dominated industry. Her upcoming projects include Srijit Mukherjee’s period drama ‘Begum Jaan’ and ‘Tumhari Sulu’.

And rest, they say, is history. Aishwarya won the Miss World crown and made India proud globally. Soon the glowing beauty was flooded with many film offers. But instead of jumping at offers immediately, she waited for some years and chose Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film ‘Iruvar’ to make her acting debut, in 1997. The very same year, she also made her Hindi film debut with the film ‘Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya’ opposite Bobby Deol. Though in the initial years of her movie career, the actress and beauty queen did not get much success with her films, but once she started picking up right scripts and directors, there was no looking back for her.

TRIVIA: Aish has Katsaridaphobia, fear of cockroaches.

           8. KANGANA RANAUT (10 CRORE)

They say making a mark in Bollywood is tough if you don’t happen to belong to any filmy family. But the feisty and outspoken Kangana Ranaut proved everyone wrong and, with her unwavering dedication and perseverance, took herself to the top throne of the industry. Today, Kangana is considered one of the badass actresses of Bollywood who can get into any character and play any frigging role to perfection. Though the three time National Award winning actress was not seen in any film in the year gone by, she still managed to retain her top position in the industry. Kangana takes home a staggering Rs. 10 crores from one project.

Born on 23rd March, 1986, in a small town in Himachal Pradesh, Kangana never wanted to take a plunge into the glitzy world of entertainment. Though PC was the leading lady of the film, Kangana took everybody by surprised when she was conferred with the National film award for Best Supporting Actress for the film. Since then she has been a part of several commercially successful films including ‘Raaz: The Mystery Continues’, ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Krrish 3’, ‘Queen’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, to name a few. Before joining the Indian film industry as an actress, she had worked as a costume designer. Currently, Sonakshi is one of the leading female actresses in Bollywood and charges a hefty amount for doing a film. Her fees per film is said to be Rs. 11 crores.

Since her debut film ‘Dabangg’, Sonakshi has been a part of a number of successful movies. She is one of those Bollywood actresses who have worked with almost all big stars of the industry. Be it Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn or Akshay Kumar, her pairing has been appreciated with all leading men she has shared screen space with. Some of her most successful films include ‘Dabangg’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’, ‘Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty’ and ‘Dabangg 2’ to name a few. Though Sonakshi has done several blockbuster films, critical acclaim remained elusive to her till Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Lootera’ happened. Her role of a woman suffering from tuberculosis brought her a lot of critical appreciation and she was even nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 2013. ‘Lootera’ still remains one of her best films if assessed on the basis of performance. The upcoming projects of the actress include ‘Noor’, ‘Namastey England’, ‘Dabangg 3’ and ‘Ittefaq Remake’.

TRIVIA: Her looks are often compared with the yesteryear actress Reena Roy, who has shared screen with her father, Shatrughan Sinha, in several films.

Anushka Sharma is one of those few lucky actresses who got to work with all the three leading Khans of Bollywood – Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan – within a very short span of time. The gorgeous actress started her acting career with the Aditya Chopra directorial ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in 2008. The romantic movie, also starring megastar Shah Rukh Khan, went on to do exceptional business at the ticket window and emerged as one of the most successful ventures of the year, hence helping her establish her career in tinsel town. Since her debut film, Anushka has added several feathers to her cap. Apart from winning Filmfare Best Actress Trophy and delivering many blockbusters, she has set up her own production firm called Clean Slate Films. She currently demands and gets Rs. 11 crores per film.

Born on 1st May 1988 in Ayodhya, Anushka was raised in Bangalore. After keeping herself busy with modeling assignments in her hometown, she decided to move to Mumbai for better prospects in 2007. On reaching Mumbai, one day she went to audition for an upcoming Yash Raj Films’ movie. Following her successful audition, she was selected for ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ opposite none other than Shah Rukh Khan. Rest is history. Soon, the actress delivered another super hit film ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ with the same production company, Yash Raj Films. Her next ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ with the same leading banner won her a Best Supporting Actress award at Filmfare. Since then, the actress has starred in a number of critically and commercially successful movies like ‘NH 10’, ‘PK’, and ‘Sultan’, to name a few. Her upcoming projects include ‘The Ring’.

TRIVIA: Anushka came to Mumbai with her then boyfriend ‘Zoheb’, who also wanted to make a career in the fashion and entertainment industry. But due to unavailability of work and opportunities, he moved back to his native place, while Anushka became a star. The duo could not maintain their relationship due to the long distance between them.

Bollywood has seen many beauties since it came into being, but none like Kajol. The daughter of veteran actress, Tanuja, Kajol is one actress who refuses to age as if she has put the clock on rest permanently. The actress has been in Bollywood since so many years now, but her charm and allure is still enough strong to pull the audience to theaters. Though she does not do films that frequently now, wherever she graces the silver screen, her fans go crazy. Many of her contemporaries have retired from the job, but Kajol does not only continue to work but also takes home the same amount of money as remuneration that other leading ladies from the current generation receive. The gorgeous actress is currently paid Rs. 13 crores per film and is rated among one of the highest paid Bollywood actresses.

Born on 5th August, 1974, Kajol entered showbiz with the 1992 movie ‘Bekhudi’. The film did not do well, but the actress was praised for her skills. Later she starred in ‘Baazigar’ opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film, directed by Abbas-Mustan, inflamed the box-office and became her first commercial success. She continued the good work and delivered in successful films like ‘Yeh Dillagi’ and others. But her life changed when she paired up with Shah Rukh Khan for ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ in 1995. DDLJ termed out to be one of the biggest hits of Indian cinema, making Shah Rukh and Kajol overnight superstars. A flurry of records which this film created at its time of release is still unbroken and will remain so in many years to come. After the rousing success of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, Kajol appeared in several other successful films, some of them being ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’, ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Gupt’, ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…’, ‘Fanaa’ and ‘My Name Is Khan’. For her villainous act in the 1997 suspense thriller ‘Gupt’, Kajol went on to win a Filmfare Award for Best Villain. Besides a Filmfare Award for Best Villain, Kajol has also taken home five Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ in 1995, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ in 1998, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…’ in 2001, ‘Fanaa’ in 2006 and ‘My Name Is Khan’ in the year 2010.TRIVIA: Kajol holds a joint record with her aunt and yesteryear actress Nutan for winning the Best Actress Filmfare Awards 5 times.

People may opine that for a girl who happens to be the daughter of an iconic actor like Anil Kapoor, entering and making a name in showbiz would be much easier than those who do not have any kith and kin in the industry. But that was never the case with Sonam Kapoor. Though the actress belonged to a family which had many of its members working in the film industry, she had to go through her own share of ups and downs before making it to the top. Not only she is considered a fine actress today, but she is also one of the highest paid actresses of Bollywood and the recipient of a number of awards, including one Filmfare Award.

Born 9 June 1985, Sonam Kapoor studied theatre and arts at the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore and then assisted renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the 2005 film ‘Black’ before making her acting debut with ‘Saawariya’ opposite another debutant, Ranbir Kapoor. Interestingly, her maiden film was directed by Sanjay who she had assisted earlier. ‘Saawariya’ could not meet the expectations and lost out its battle to Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ which it clashed with during Diwali in 2007. After the debacle of her debut film, Sonam kept working and appeared in several other projects, but commercial success came to her three years later when her film ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ (2010) went on to do extremely well at the ticket window. But she again had to experience a lull period until Anand L Rai’s ‘Raanjhanaa’ (2013) hit theaters and brought her into reckoning once again. After the success of ‘Raanjhanaa’, Sonam did ‘Khoobsurat’ and ‘Dolly Ki Doli’. Both films generated a very lukewarm response at the box office. She essayed the character of princes in her next film ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ (2015) which had superstar Salman Khan opposite her. Breaking all box office records, the film emerged as one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time. But her breakout performance was yet to come! In 2015, Sonam made a splash at the box-office with her biopic ‘Neerja’. The audience and critics unanimously praised the actress for portraying the titular role of Neerja Bhanot, a purser killed by the hijackers while helping to save 359 of the 379 passengers and crew of the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on 5 September 1986. Like ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’, ‘Neerja’ also emerged as one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films. It won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.TRIVIA: Bollywood actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are her cousins.

She has been crowned Miss World once. She is the queen of Bollywood. She is India’s international star who has made our country proud almost in each and every nook and corner of the world. Yes, we are talking about our very own desi girl, Priyanka Chopra. The former beauty queen has so many achievements, accolades and awards to her credit that the whole world knows who she is. She certainly does not need an introduction. Before becoming an international sensation, Priyanka has had a successful career in Hindi films and still rules millions of Indian hearts despite not starring in many Bollywood films. 2016 saw the release of only one Priyanka Chopra starrer – ‘Jai Gangaajal’. The film did average business at the box-office, but that does not mean, she has slashed her prices. She still charges a humongous Rs. 20 crores for a film.

Priyanka Chopra was born on 18 July 1982 and won Miss World 2000 pageant. Her win at the prestigious pageant caught the attention of many Bollywood producers and suddenly Priyanka was flooded with many film offers. Finally, she chose the 2003 film ‘The Hero’ to enter Hindi films. The film was a success at the box-office. Her second film ‘Andaaz’ hit the screens the same year and became an instant hit. After the success of ‘Andaaz’, Priyanka tried her hand at comedy and starrer in David Dhawan’s ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ (2004). The film was a blockbuster. The same year, Priyanka surprised the audience with her villainous act in Abbas-Mustan’s ‘Aitzaaz’ and received applause from all corners. The very next year, PC delivered two back to back blockbusters ‘Krrish’ and ‘Don’ and became one of the leading actresses of Bollywood. Since then the actress has been a part of many hit and super hit films including ‘Kaminey’, ‘Barfi!’, ‘Mary Kom’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’. Padma Shri Priyanka Chopra has been named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine. Talking about the current projects of the actress, PC is currently busy with her American TV series ‘Quantico’. The release of her first Hollywood flick ‘Baywatch’ is also round the corner.

Kareena Kapoor, also known by her married name Kareena Kapoor Khan after her marriage to actor Saif Ali Khan, is one of the most popular and talented actresses of Bollywood. Daughter of yesteryear actors, Randhir Kapoor and Babita and younger sister of popular actress Karisma Kapoor, Kareena has become popular world over by playing a diverse range of characters in her career spanning over one and a half year. The recipient of many awards, including six Filmfare Awards, she is currently one of the most popular and highest-paid actresses in India. The actress charges Rs. 21 crores for one film.

Born on 21st September, 1980, Kareena started her acting career with the 2000 war film ‘Refugee’, directed by noted filmmaker, JP Dutta. The film also starred another debutant, Abhishek Bachchan, as the male lead. Kareena appeared in a number of big budgeted films afterwards, but none of the film could do much to stabilize her career in the industry until the Karan Johar directed multi starrer ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…’ happened in 2001. The film opened to positive response and Kareena managed to stand out in the film which had the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Kajol and Hrithik Roshan. Again, her success could not last long as a number of her films released after Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…’ met a dismal fate at the box-office. Critics panned her in most of the films released in that period. But soon fortune smiled on her as her 2004 film ‘Chameli’, where she played a sex worker, opened to positive response. The year marked a turning point in her career, and since then there has been no looking back for the actress. After ‘Chameli’, she went on to star in several successful films like ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Omkara’, ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and the most recent ‘Udta Punjab’.

TRIVIA: Very few people know that her birth name was ‘Siddhima’, given by her grandfather, Raj Kapoor.

With a staggering Rs. 26 crores fee per movie, actress Deepika Padukone tops the list of the highest paid Bollywood actresses in 2016. Forget Bollywood, she is one of the highest paid actresses in the world. Blessed with exquisite beauty and excellent acting chops, the diva has enamored movie enthusiasts all over the world. She recently made her Hollywood debut with the Vin Diesel starrer action flick ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’ and has become a global phenomenon since then. Talking about her supremacy in Bollywood, she is currently the number one actress who everyone wants to work with – from topnotch filmmakers to all A-list actors.

Born on 5th January, 1986, in Copenhagen and raised in Bangalore, Deepika was a badminton player in her teenage and even played in national level championships. But her inclination towards fashion modeling led her quite the game and try her luck in modeling. After a successful stint in modeling, she was soon offered movie roles. In the 2006 Kannada film ‘Aishwarya’, Deepika is seen playing the female lead before she made her Hindi film debut with the Farah Khan directorial ‘Om Shanti Om’. ‘Om Shanti Om’ opened to packed houses and became an all-time blockbuster. Deepika took home a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. ‘Om Shanti Om’ was followed by ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ and ‘Chandni Chowk to China’. Both films could not repeat the success of her debut film, but turned out to be average grossers. Padukone’s performance in her next film ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009) received huge applause from all quarters. After ‘Love Aaj Ka’, Deepika went on to do several notable films like ‘Housefull’ (2010), ‘Cocktail’ (2012), ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ (2013), ‘Chennai Express’ (2013), and ‘Happy New Year’ (2014), and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s costume drama ‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015). Her performance in Shoojit Sircar’s comedy-drama film ‘Piku’ (2015) won her two Best Actress awards at Filmfare.
