Bollywood star released on bail ! - 21 May 2009

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of obscene behaviour at a recent fashion show.

The actor asked his wife to unbutton his jeans while on the catwalk during the show in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) last month.

A complaint of obscenity was subsequently lodged with police.

Kumar is the brand ambassador of Levi's "Unbuttoned" range and one of Bollywood's most popular stars.

He has apologised, saying he did not mean to cause any offence by his actions.

On Monday he visited Mumbai's Vakola police station where the complaint was registered, an officer told the BBC.

The star was arrested and immediately released on bail. The case is expected to be heard in court at a later date.

'Vulgar'

During his catwalk appearance at Lakme India Fashion Week in April, Akshay Kumar walked up to his wife, Twinkle Khanna, who was seated in the front row, and asked her to undo the top button of his jeans.

The case against him was filed by Anil P Nayar, a social worker, who says the unbuttoning of the jeans was "vulgar and indecent".

In an interview with the Hindustan Times newspaper published on Monday, Kumar apparently made light of the complaint.

"I just want to make it home... without my car being egged by all those who have never been unbuttoned by their wives," he said.

Kumar has made a name for himself by playing lead roles in action and comedy films.

His film, Singh is King, was one of the biggest hits of 2008.

In 2007, he appeared in several hits, like Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Welcome.

He was recently awarded Padma Shri, India's civilian award for eminent people.
